A dreamlike film from the man The Advocate dubbed "porn's enfant terrible" takes erotica/pornography to a new artistic level. Brad Braverman classic features three artistic vignettes, including a voyeuristic four-way with sailors set in the 1940s (with a decidedly Jean Genet homoerotic feel) and a chilling, erotic and disturbing vampire sequence.
In the middle of the night, a handsome young man struggles with insomnia, a result of receiving prank phone calls. As he falls in and out of sleep, he has three different erotic dreams: a tryst with a hunk in a 1950's suburban backyard pool; an erotic yet disturbing vampire sequence, and a voyeuristic four-way with French sailors set in the 1940's (an homage to Jean Genet).
Concept, imagery and mood all mesh in this surreal yet wonderful exploration of states of consciousness by director Ellery Stag. Mark Steel is a man awakened by a mysterious and unknown caller; fitfully trying to fall back asleep, he roams the eerily lit crevices of his apartment. Touching a mirror, he is dreamily transported poolside. He touches the surface of a still pool, alluding to water as: a reflection of our hidden desires, a mirror into our souls, a means of death (drowning), and a means of transformation (baptism).
Randy White, a submerged creature from his subconscious, pulls him into his underwater fantasy of dance and lust. Exquisitely shot and edited, and filmed with blue-wash tones, these two perform gracefully and erotically underwater. They kiss, 69 each other, and Randy plugs Mark while standing. On the verge of cumming, Mark is mystically transported poolside, where he delivers his seed above ground.
Restless and sleep-walking, perhaps, he hears a noise in his den, and upon opening the door, walks into a Gothic chamber complete with lustful vampire Aiden Shaw ravishing an entranced and beautiful Bill Marlowe. As Mark voyeurs through elaborate candelabra, we watch this sepia-toned sequence that features uncontrolled animal sex heightened by certain and impending doom, surely a symbol of sex in these times.
